TRETTIOÅRIGA KRIGET
Trettioåriga Kriget (1974)
Krigssång (1975)
Legendary Swedish heavy-progressive who released 8 albums between 1974 and 2004.The only addition to the normal guitar, bass and drums instrumentation is some mellotron here and there. It´s musical excellence with plenty of extended gratuitous guitar jams and very intricate lyrics.I´d like to recommend this band to everyone but since the lyrics are in swedish and such a big part of the music perhaps some might not understand it.In several ways,Trettioåriga Kriget ("The 30-year War" in English) can be compare to ANGLAGARD and LANDBERK to sense their influence. In the first,self-titled album, the songs feature various tempos and moods throughout, and plenty of odd times and jagged riffs. The keyboard sounds on a few songs are supplied by the incredible mellotron, uncredited and played by the drummer. The second "Krigssang" is an album that fans of 70's rock in general will enjoy, and not just progressive rock listeners. In sum, this is one of the definitive Scandinavian prog albums.

VV.AA. : FOLK IS NOT A FOUR LETTER WORD

Folk????????

Proving that folk music is far more than beards and pewter tankards,Folk Is Not A Four Letter Word collates 16 songs plucked from relative obscurity, obsessively and lovingly curated along with enthusiastic and illuminating liner notes by Twisted Nerve's Andy Votel. So this is folk, but maybe not as you know it.Although the songs are played on conventional instruments, there's as much diversity here as in any musical genre, and each song sounds like it should be on the coolest movie soundtrack ever.Could that really be true of folk? You bet.

West-Coast Hard-Psych Monster
Top-level guitar blowout in the form of a Hawaii live recording featuring 4 great musicians,ex-Raider Drake Levin among them.Long, intense jams on a mix of covers and originals.Essential to any fan of west coast acid rock jam bands.Great cover, and a cool poster that's included with the classy (bootleg) reissue. The band was formed for this concert while Drake Levin and Joel Christie were vacationing in Hawaii. The festival was a big deal with several bands (incl Little Feat) and an estimated crowd of 55.000.The recording and release of the LP wasn't pre-planned but happened as a consequence of the band's terrific performance.Christie was formerly with Orange Colored Sky and together with Levin plays on Lee Michaels' 6th LP,while Dale Loyola play on the Hook LP.

SUN RA SEXTET at the Village Vanguard (SATURN 1991)

This recording presents the spiritual and musical explorations of the late Sun Ra in a rare (and relatively quiet and pensive) small group setting;the lone horn player is longtime Ra associate John Gilmore,on tenor sax;and the bassist is John Ore,whose career also included early stints with Cecil Taylor and Thelonious Monk.Recorded live at the Village Vanguard in November of 1991,Sun Ra's playful synthesizer lines explore standards and originals including extensive versions of "Round Midnight" and "Sun Ra Blues."

PINK FLOYD : LA CARRERA PANAMERICANA

1. Run Like Hell (Gilmour, Waters) [00:49]
Recorded:New York,Nassau Coliseum,August 19-23,1988
Source:"La Carrera Panamericana" LaserDiscThis version of "Run Like Hell" is in fact a short extract from the "Delicate Sound of Thunder" version, with a new recorded ending.

2. Country Theme (Gilmour) [02:00]
Recorded:?
Source:"La Carrera Panamericana" LaserDisc

3-4. Small Theme (Parts I-II) (Gilmour) [07:22]
Recorded:?
Source:"La Carrera Panamericana" LaserDisc

5. Big Theme (Gilmour) [04:10]
Recorded:?
Source:"La Carrera Panamericana" LaserDisc

6. Carrera Slow Blues (Gilmour, Mason, Wright) [02:19]
Recorded:?
Source:2nd gen copy from "La Carrera Panamericana" TV broadcastThis song was taken from the BBC TV broadcast of the film (it's not on the LaserDisc or video release, although it's listed at the end of the tracklist). Since the music was slightly re-organised on the broadcast version of the film, the talking that can be heard during "Carrera Slow Blues" is in fact a part of the talking that's placed somewhere during "Big Theme" on the LaserDisc version.

7. Mexico '78 (Gilmour) [04:04]
Recorded:?
Source:"La Carrera Panamericana" LaserDisc

8-9. Pan Am Shuffle (Parts I-II) (Gilmour, Mason, Wright) [08:09]
Recorded : ?
Source: "La Carrera Panamericana" LaserDisc and 2nd gen copy from "La Carrera Panamericana" TV broadcastThe song "Pan Am Shuffle" appears at different places during the film:first at the beginning of the film, then during the ending credits.Besides that, the length of the credits varies on the different versions of the film (LaserDisc, video or TV broadcast):since the song fades out on both LaserDisc and video releases, only the broadcast version of the film contains the very end of the song.So we combined several parts of the LaserDisc and the TV broadcast,to have the full length version.

DEERFIELD : NIL DESPERANDUM (US'71)

Houston Rural Psych

This is a solid LP.It's somewhere between acoustic west coast rock,late-period Beatles and Psychedelic Country-Rock (!!!).The songwriting is strong and reasonably ambitious, including a well-realized Kak-like suite on part of side two.The album has a fresh, summery feel to it.Originals (pressed on thick vinyl, in thick covers) come with a clever insert,an envelope that has some of the song lyrics written into letter form. The bass player of this band was in 1960's Austin band Bryan's Blokes, whose members would occasionally fill in for absent 13th Floor Elevators members on live gigs.A 5-piece band with some acid fuzz guitars, organ, mandolin, autoharp, pedal steel, bass, drums and male vocals.

The Complete Original Motion Picture Soundtrack Recoding

A haunting, powerful, evocative and downright scary soundtrack from Keith Emerson for Dario Argento's 1980 movie.

According to a text by the italian alchemist Varelli,3 infernal deities live in 3 cursed houses,in New York,Rome and Freiburg:the three Mothers,i.e.,Mater Suspiriorum (the Mother of all Sighs),Mater Lacrimarum (the Mother of all Tears) and Mater Tenebrarum (the Mother of Darkness). After reading the book and taking the risks of exploring the galleries under her house's basement, young Rose Lilliott is convinced that the house she has jus settled in is Mater Tenebrarum's.This awareness costs the girl her life;she just manages to inform her brother Mark, who studies musicology in Rome,of her discovery.More deaths follow;everybody who somewhat senses the frightful secret of the house dies.Back in N.Y.,Mark settles in the house and runs the risk of being killed many times. While a violent fire destroys the the house he finally discovers the truth on the three Mothers.....

JEAN-LUC PONTY : THE BEST OF THE PACIFIC JAZZ YEARS (1968-1969)

Violin Virtuoso (+ a bit of FZ)

Classically trained,Jean Luc Ponty made his name in Europe in the mid sixties as the Coltrane of the violin for his dazzling technique and brilliant improvising abilities. After making his US debut at the Monterey Jazz Festival in 1967,he was signed by Pacific Jazz Records. In two brief years,he made several albums in a variety of settings including the George Duke trio and Gerald Wilson's big band. His final album "King Kong" was devoted to the music of Frank Zappa and became his springboard into the world of fusion. These initial U.S. recordings reveal a mature virtuoso equally comfortable with the compositions of Herbie Hancock and Ron Carter and the more rockish work of Zappa and the Beatles.Featuring George Duke,Bud Shank,Ernie Watts, Frank Zappa,Daniel Humair,Ian Underwood and others.

Hüsnü Şenlendirici & Laço Tayfa : Bergama Gaydasi (TURKEY 2000)

New (and Old) Turkish Music

Laço Tayfa who gained instant notoriety with the highly respected album 'In The BuzzBag' they recorded with Brooklyn Funk Essentials are now back with their own brand. Some of the tracks on their debut album 'Bergama Gaydasi,'such as:Malatya,Izmir'in Kavaklari,Fidayda and Çiftetelli have already become anthems of the music markets on Istiklal Cad which is thought to keep the pulse of the recording industry at large. In this album,Laço Tayfa -which is founded and led by Turkish clarinet virtuoso Hüsnü Şenlendirici- combines the traditional sounds of Asia Minor and Thrace with Laço Tayfa magic and a highly sophisticated infrastructure.Contemporary musician/composer/conductor/legend Lawrence 'Butch' Morris sat in as a consultant for this unorthodox project.Laco Tayfa works with tradional folk material from each of the regions of Turkey, using signature Roma tunes as a basis for a new synthesis which incorporates jazz harmonies, riffs and textures with Indian tabla as well as North African and Arabic rhythmic patterns. The album written and composed by gifted musicians captures the quality of a travelogue which will be fully experienced by music lovers.

SIRIUS : SIRIUS RISING (US'79)

Hard-Psych (Post Bubble Puppy & Demian).

Though typically overshadowed by International Artists labelmates the 13th Floor Elevators,Bubble Puppy enjoyed arguably the greatest commercial success of all the Texas psychedelic bands, scoring a Top 20 pop hit with "Hot Smoke & Sasafrass".The roots of the group lie in the Corpus Christi-based Bad Seeds, a trio comprising singer/guitarist Rod Prince, bassist Roy Cox,and drummer Clayton Pulley (later replaced by David Fore);with the 1967 addition of guitarist Todd Potter, the foursome changed their name to Willowdale Handcar, finally settling on Bubble Puppy a year later.Their raw,garage-psych sound soon landed the group a deal with the famed Texas label International Artists, which issued Bubble Puppy's debut LP,A Gathering of Promises,in 1969;despite the runaway success of "Hot Smoke & Sasafrass,"subsequent singles including "If I Had a Reason," "Days of Our Time," and "What Do You See?" stiffed, prompting the quartet to change its name to Demian.A self-titled effort followed in 1971 on ABC/Dunhill,but when the single "Face the Crowd" garnered little attention, the band dissolved. In 1977 Prince and Potter teamed under the name Sirius, recruiting bassist George Rarey and drummer Mark Evans to record 1979's Sirius Rising;in 1987,the original Bubble Puppy lineup reunited, drawing influence from the latter-day Texas rock of ZZ Top for their comeback LP,Wheels Go Round.Cox subsequently fronted the BluesKnights.

ARC : ...AT THIS (UK'71)

Great Progressive Bluesrock

This progressive blues/rock album involved some former members of Skip Bifferty and is now a minor collectable. They formed the band in 1970 when Graham Bell joined Every Which Way but never really made a living on their own and later joined Graham Bell in Bell and Arc.Three parts Scottish and one part Australian their band now clearly stands up as a progressive rock outfit, but manages to avoid most of its pitfalls and the results are generally rather impressive. Most importantly they succeed in restraining themselves, without losing any emotional impact. They have the ability to write memorable tunes and arrange them well. The vocals are a strong point, often oddly harmonized and never overstated.Heavier tracks alternate with more poetic ones. All in all a very pleasant album to listen to.

FELA RANSOME KUTI & AFRICA'70 feat. GINGER BAKER : Live! (1971)

AFROROCK

Live! was recorded in 1971 with Fela's group at the time, the Africa 70.Due to its demanding performance schedule, the band is remarkably tight.Interlocking rhythms drive keyboard and guitar vamps, propelling instrumental soloists on trumpet and saxophone. There's a nice jazzy feel here, manifested both in an elastic sense of time and in an ensemble approach to performance.Improvised passages lie interspersed between statements of the theme, with Fela improvising on voice or delivering some rather frank lyrics in English and Yoruba. For example, the message of the opener:Let's get it on! (This piece features Ginger Baker sitting in for Tony Allen on drums, and he does quite well.Baker trades his usual heavy-handed approach for a lighter touch, dancing in and around the beat.)Live! is as tight, funky, and sensual as any record Fela Kuti ever made.Having Ginger Baker in the mix makes it a bit unusual, but this is an excellent recording suitable for Fela initiates and devotees alike.

GLORY : ON THE AIR (US'70)

Hard-Psych Monster

Recorded Live in Studio for a Radio Broadcast

This one is from San Diego,5 guys,on this album of heavy guitar psych released for the first time at the end of 1990's.Those Super Vox amps burning their sound onto this record.Powerful guitar led jamming long-hair rock in the tradition of Josefus,Demian and Blue Cheer. The cover is made by the same artist who did Butterfingers.A no-frills teenage hardrock blast cut live in studio afterhours at a radio station in San Diego in June 1970.No traces of flower power whatsoever as the remarkably tight band blows through their Ya-Ya's era Stones/Led Zep club set of ½ covers and ½ great originals.Vocalist is right on,lead guitarist won't quit, but the real show is the stunning interplay between the rhythm guy and the drummer.Perfect loud soundscape with 100% presence, the whole thing recalls Oda and the rootsier side of the Estes Bros.A future meat & potatoes hard rock classic. The band recorded several 45s and more material may be released. In the 1980s they resurfaced as popular combo the Beat Farmers.

HAMPTON GREASE BAND : MUSIC TO EAT (US'71) [2cds]

SUCKROCK!!!

This is the word HGB uses to define its unique sound.Or perhaps more accurately, the band's decidely punk will-to-fail ethos, for their musicianship does not suck at all.A double album released in 1971 and purported to be the second-worst selling album in the history of Columbia records,"Music To Eat" stands alone in the rock canon, and understandably has become something of a cult favorite. The Hampton Grease Band was an American rock band, beginning as a blues-rock group in the late 1960s in Atlanta,Georgia. They performed with several major bands in this period, including Grateful Dead and the Allman Brothers. The band gained a reputation for wacky stage antics. After the album's release the band signed to Frank Zappa's Bizarre/Straight label, but broke up in 1973.Several of the members went on to more renowned music careers, including Glenn Phillips' solo work and Bruce Hampton's work with the Aquarium Rescue Unit.Lead guitarist Harold Kelling died in May, 2005.He was the musical genius of the band. The Hampton Grease Band held their first reunion concert on June 2nd,2006,at the Variety Playhouse in Little 5 Points,Georgia,a commercial area in Atlanta. They played the "Music to Eat" album but also played some covers in their two encores, including an incendiary version of "Rock Around the Clock".This album is one of my US favs.
Highly Recommended.

ARBETE OCH FRITID : ANDRA LP (SWEDEN'71)

Avant-Folk Jazz-Prog ?????

Arbete & Fritid were very much in the Silence-label underground style, comparable to Träd Gräs och Stenar (with whom they shared some bandmembers). The band frequently changed members with cellist and composer Ove Karlsson being the exception. The musicians teaming up in Arbete & Fritid all had a experimental jazz background but were also inspired by avant-garde minimalist composers such as John Cage,Terry Riley and LaMonte Young. But it was the newly awaken interest in Nordic folk music traditions that got the band started in 1969 and it was the bands unique blend of folk music, jazz, rock and avant-garde experiments that made them one of the truly unique bands in the early 70's,long before anyone heard of world music.Arbete & Fritid was one of the most appreciated live acts during the 70's,maybe because you never knew what the concerts were going to be like.It could start off as a rock concert,as a meditative Indian concert,as a vital folk music gig or as an avant-garde jazz night;and before it was all ended you could be sure to have all your preconceptions turned around. These concerts would many times also include some half-crazy vocal tracks,in dadaist tradition.Arbete & Fritid have inspired many other artists to experiment with Nordic folk music and with the nearly 1000 concerts they played they opened a lot of people's minds for music without boundaries. Many of the lengthy jams that made up their gigs were never transformed into records. This is their second album (SONET SLP 2526).

AKINETON RETARD : AKINETON RETARD (CHILE'99)

Futuristic Progressive Rock

From Santiago one of the most important south american bands with a great sound tension by strong urban jazz-rock avant-garde way.Screaming sax and clarinet with ripping blues-psych guitar and a wild and eclectic rhythmical section.Very much influenced by King Crimson,Akineton Retard play an aggressive form of angular, modern progressive rock that has few if any equals on the current scene. There is also something of the NY 'downtown' scene present in their uniquely avant-garde take on the prog rock genre.Maybe hints at Curlew or even John Zorn's groundbreaking ensemble Naked City. This is their first album.

Pierre Bensusan has a reputation as something of an innovator in the field of solo acoustic guitar, including his use of the DADGAD tuning system, and his experimentation with electronics such as delays, distortions and volume pedals, which have been largely abandoned on recent tours.Stylistically, his playing exhibits remarkable dynamics and tone control, usually to be found only in the playing of high-profile classical guitarists. The sophisticated, highly syncopated bass lines incorporated into his counterpoint arrangements also set him apart form the main host of contemporary fingerstyle players. His unique style of scat-singing more than makes up for in warmth, inventiveness and charm what it lacks in technical ability and he has continued to work this semi-improvised style into his compositions, both pre-composed and improvised. He has collaborated extensively with saxophonist Didier Malherbe, but today his tours are largely solo.

Beautiful and captivating,Intuite is his first entirely solo acoustic instrumental album and his first new studio recording in eight years.

JD BLACKFOOT : THE ULTIMATE PROPHECY (US'70)

US Psych Milestone

J.D. Blackfoot's The Ultimate Prophecy, originally released on the Mercury label (SR 61288) in 1970,is widely regarded as one of the top US psych albums of all time. The band, which was from Columbus,Ohio, began as a combination of two local groups,The EbbTide and Tree, the latter winning a recording contract with Mercury as a prize in a local band competition.Craig Fuller, later a founding member of Pure Prairie League, joined the band, which by this time had changed its name to J.D. Blackfoot, after some of the material for The Ultimate Prophecy had been written.Shortly after the release of the album,Blackfoot left the group which continued to perform as Osiris, while J.D. himself assembled a new outfit which delivered two well-received albums for Fantasy. The Ultimate Prophecy with its killer psych guitar, combined a strong British sound with the distinctive song-oriented California sound of Grateful Dead and Neil Young, two of the main inspirations for many an aspiring rock musician of the time. However, despite the laid back rural West Coast sound that the band effortlessly cultivates, shades of UK progsters such as Jethro Tull and the Moody Blues often come to the fore revealing what is,in essence the group's true musical intentions.Nevertheless, this is a fine album, beautifully played (drummer Dan Waldron is in many ways the hero of the hour) and extremely well recorded.

AME SON : CATALYSE (FRANCE'70)

Avant-Spacerock ???

Pioneer from the French underground scene since the late Sixties, with ex-members from Daevid Allen's Bananamoon.Ame Son is halfway between melodic passages with long spacey tunes and avant-garde improvisations made of strident sounds.Ame son played in all the greatest festivals like Amougies,Les halles,Biot,Le Bourget and had a lot of success from both the audience and critics. The music was strongly influenced by early Gong with psychedelic jams leaded by flute and guitar.

HAIZEA : HONTZ GAUA (SPAIN'79)

ProgFolkPsych (!??)

Basque progressive folk of the label Elkar,HAIZEA were a five-piece from the Basque area of Spain.Sporting a sound that could best be described as psychedelic electric folk, the instrumentation consists of guitar (sometimes two),bass, drums, flute, assorted percussive things, and the captivating voice of Amaia Zubiria. Both albums are very interesting."Hontz Gaua" is a classic prog free folk item with some Gregorian element, nice female (second male) vocals and beautiful atmospheric double bass."Haizea" is a bit more intimate.

THUNDERPUSSY : DOCUMENTS OF CAPTIVITY (US'73)

Killer Progressive Hard-Psych from Illinois!

Illinois progressive psych band, long a staple of the collector-scumbag private pressing universe (previously booted on LP in the 1980's).A beautifully dated suite of songs with deep, poetic musings on the nature of good vs. evil, class inequalities and other meaningless subjects, this mixes fragile acoustic interludes with complex searing acid guitar arrangements, traditional prog-rock time craziness and general higher elevation musical themes. Printed in minute quantities, this one's attracted a cult following and some glistening reviews. The original was pressed on very thin vinyl, most copies have slight bowl warps. There is also a posthumous EP with unreleased tracks. This is the kind of 'prog' album that seems to go over pretty well with psych or hard rock fans. It's full of weird ideas and cool guitar playing.Steven Jay Morris envisioned an epic poem set to music. Each song is a "document" with lyrics and then an instrumental “Amen” or flourish. The "documents" are a six-part progression running 37:07.It is an examination of the traps and pitfalls humankind create for themselves in the passage of their lives,as well as the possibility of releasing one's self from them. The liner notes describe the exact intention of each "document",as well as that of the instrumentation. As a result the song titles are pretty cumbersome in the best proggy tradition.Highly Recommended.

KULTIVATOR : BARNDOMENS STIGAR (SWEDEN'81)

AWESOME STUFF!!!!!!!!

Plus 2 Bonus Tracks

Kultivator is a Swedish band as unique as unclassifiable. This was formed in 1978 by the nucleus of Tunnelbanan (Stefan Carlsson, Johan Svärd and Johan Hedrén), symphonic prog rock band highly influenced by YES and GENESIS,the guitarist Jonas Linge whose playing is reminiscent of Phil Miller and the soprano Ingemo Rylander. The band split just after the release of their first and unique album, due to the apparition of Punk-Rock and New-wave that appealed more to people at that time. The LP named "Barndomens Stigar" recorded in 1981 was reedited on CD in 1992.On that occasion, the band reformed in order to release two bonus tracks (#9 & #10). Today, the members of Kultivator follow various artistic solo careers (music, theater and teaching).
Kultivator's music:a vast field of investigations! It seems impossible in a first approximation to classify them in a musical category rather than in another.Indeed, the facets of their music are so numerous, and one can notice the same about their influences, and their originality taken from their folkloric Swedish roots. The band itself recognized the following influences:Magma,King Cimson,Hatfield & the North,Henry Cow,Art Bears,Gentle Giant,Art Zoyd and Univers Zero.A true hybrid to sum up that blends influences from Zeuhl,Art Rock,Canterbury,RIO and symphonic progrock.

JERRY JEFF WALKER : Mr. BOJANGLES (US'68)

His First Solo Album

Walker was born Ronald Clyde Crosby in Oneonta,New York.During the late 1950s,Crosby was a member of a local Oneonta teen band called The Tones. The band traveled to Philadelphia to audition for Dick Clark's "American Bandstand",but were turned down.Members of the band found Dick Clark's house and were able to get a recommendation to audition at New York City's Baton Records through the company's lead producer Sol Rabinowitz. The band was given a recording contract, but the studio wanted a quintet backed by studio musicians, which left Crosby and another member out of their recordings.
After high school,Crosby joined the National Guard, but his thirst for adventure led him to go AWOL and roam the country busking for a living in areas like New Orleans,Texas,Florida, and New York.He played mostly ukulele until Harriet Ottenheimer, one of the founders of The Quorum, got him settled on a guitar in 1963.He adopted his stage name "Jerry Jeff Walker" in 1966.He spent his early folk music days in Greenwich Village in the mid 1960s.He co-founded a band with Bob Bruno in the late 1960s called Circus Maximus that put out two albums one with the popular west coast hit "Wind", but Bruno's interest in jazz apparently diverged from Walker's interest in folk music.Walker thus resumed his solo career and recorded the seminal album "Mr. Bojangles" with the help of David Bromberg and other influential Atlantic recording artists."Mr. Bojangles" (written by Walker) is perhaps his most well-known and most-often covered song.It was about an obscure alcoholic but talented tap-dancing drifter,(not the famous stage and movie dancer Bill Robinson, as usually assumed).Bojangles is thought to have been a folk character who entertained informally in the south of the US and California, and some say he might have been one of the most gifted natural dancers ever.Authentic reports of him exist from the 1920s through about 1965.Artists from Nina Simone to Bob Dylan, Philip Glass to the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, have covered the song.
