A Pound for a Brown

Formed in the west country of England in 1969, Magic Muscle mixed classical nuances with Blue Cheer noise levels, thus creating a musical paradox enhanced by the band's peculiar abilities. With so many musicians passing through over the years, Magic Muscle were more of a community than a band, but at the centre of all activities was guitarist and vocalist Rod Goodway (ex-Artwoods, White Rabbit, J.P. Sunshine, Rustic Hinge), Adrian Shaw (later Hawkwind) on bass and drummer Kenny Wheeler. Working with Drachen Theaker (Crazy World Of Arthur Brown) and members of High Tide they began to gig and record, coming to the attention of disc jockey John Peel, who nearly signed them to his Dandelion label. By 1972 they had built a strong cult following and earned themselves the nickname "Bastard Sons Of Hawkwind" when they joined the latter on their Space Ritual tour (tracks from which are present on Laughs & Thrills). They also started a partnership with Keith Christmas. This brought them to the attention of Island Records - though proprietor Chris Blackwell eventually chose to promote Jamaican music at this stage instead, signing Bob Marley. In 1973 Magic Muscle gigged with the Pink Fairies and for a while were joined by John Perry (Only Ones) and violinist Simon House (High Tide/Third Ear Band/Hawkwind/David Bowie). By the end of the year Goodway was ill in hospital and ended the band. It was 1987 before the name returned, thanks to the surge in interest in the recording activities of many ex-members connected with Hawkwind. After the relative success of Laughs & Thrills Goodway undertook the compilation of an album released in 1988 which featured 1970-1973 recordings. A year later he reformed the band with Gower/Shaw/House and drummer Twink (Pink Fairies/Pretty Things/Tomorrow). Their debut concert was held in Bath on 1 August and was recorded and released as One Hundred Miles Below. Dave Brock of Hawkwind played keyboards at the gig but his contribution did not appear on the finished album. Riding high on their new found fame Goodway released a second compilation set, Living Weeds From Ancient Seeds, some of the tracks therein featuring members of Elias Hulk and Dr. John's band. In 1991 he returned with a new line-up which featured Steve Broughton on drums (Edgar Broughton Band) and guitarist Nick Saloman (aka Bevis Frond). By 1994 Goodway had returned to other pursuits while the rest of the band effectively became the new line-up for the Bevis Frond.

CHILLUM : CHILLUM (UK'71)

Chillum was born from the ashes of the progressive-psychedelic band Second Hand. They released only one lp, on Mushroom Records, in 1971. The band was led by vocalist/keyboardist Ken Elliott and drummer Kieran O'Connor, who had recorded 2 albums "Reality" and "Death May Be Your Santa Claus" as Secondhand in the late 1960s. Guitarist Toy McGill joined Chillum for its lone album, and his playing shines throughout, blending nicely with the band's extended-jam style. In fact, "Brain Strain" was recorded during McGill's audition with the band, as producer Vic Keary had the tape machines running. Bassist George Hart rounded out the band's lineup and along with O'Connor formed a solid rock rhythm section.

Music From the Darkside

Sometimes things that shouldn't work just do. Take for example this collaboration between the veteran German industrialist outfit Faust and New Jersey hip hop trio Dalek. Maybe I just like things to stick to categories. If I'm going to listen to rap music then I'll pick out Eminem or Ol' Dirty Bastard. If I want Krautrock then I'll plump for a night in with Tangerine Dream or Klaus Schulze. The merging of the genres has as much appeal as mixing porridge and pork chops, or wearing snowshoes on the beach. So much for the blinkers, this record is that rare example of a collaboration between artists from radically different corners of the musical universe achieving significantly more than the sum total of its parts. Faust dispense with their noodling and deliver a full on set of brutal, focussed rock music, scuzzy at the edges, tripping over itself in its urge to carry the fight. This relentless assault is augmented by Still's awesome turntablism, and the bitter ranting of MC Dalek - together in the mix churning out a frothing rancid stew of noise, with a beat like a bludgeon, howling with rancour. This is a genuinely dark record, that carries with it pain and fury and resentful, toe-curling misery - no more so than with the gut wrenching 'Dead Lies', or the repeated blows to a bruise that constitute the nightmarish 'Bullets Need Violence'. This is indeed a violent record, a headlong journey in to danger.The closest thing I've heard to this is Ice's "Bad Blood", but even that is not as relentless as this. It doesn't matter if you don't usually buy hip-hop, or if you don't like artists old enough to be your father, if you like the dark side then you'll like this. A vision of Hell made flesh. Merciless.

Andy Votel has produced a gem of a CD having somehow polished his beloved Vertigo collection of rough stones down producing a 60 minute mix CD featuring his pick of the bunch. Andy’s had an infatuation with the Vertigo rock catalogue for 20 years and explains on the sleeve the choice was tough, “As any symphonic-rock enthusiast will testify, prog rock tracks are not short.” 4 tracks alone could fill up this hour long album and It is testament to this DJ’s skill he has succeeded in arranging a CD grabbing your attention from start to finish, 52 superb tracks squeezed in to 68 minutes of classic progressive & psychedelic music.
Don’t be put off if you don’t recognise many names on the back cover, your peers will think you truly Avant Garde and any self-respecting muso would give his right arm for this collection. Vertigo records have so many layers they are simultaneously rocky, funky, moody & generally kick ass. Highlight of the album is the mesmerising minute long drum solo towards the end inducing the kind of dizziness you’d expect with Vertigo. This a great record to warm up pre-gig with a few JD and coke, just don’t forget to go out!

Underground Psychedelic-Punkrock (!!???)

Long before the Sex Pistols put the boot into what remained of the hippie dream, Read, guitarist Jesse Hector and bassist Alan Butler were living out those fantasies with a fury that gave other bands good reason for pause. Formed in 1969, the trio soon moved away from covering the day's more happening fare (including Small Faces' "Song Of A Baker") for an implosive urgency that won an underground following, but utterly baffled the labels that they courted. Uncrushed rounds up the six tracks honed at places like Regent Sound (1969), EMI House, Decca Studios (1970), and even the Marquee Club (1971) with a succession of bassists (including Barry Wyles of the pre-Queen link Smile). They even got a rave from Sounds following an impressive gig opening for UFO. But companies wouldn't bite, and manager/cohort Graham Breslau left in the summer of 1970, after nearly a year of fruitless effort. (Former Pink Floyd overseer Peter Jenner also declined to get involved.) By February 1971, the band had changed its name to Tiger, but found no takers for "High School Dropout"'s more restrained boogie-pop; former Crusaders guitarist Neil Christian bailed out, while orders by Black Sabbath/ELO overseer Don Arden to "sort out some gigs" never materialized. Crushed Butler split up in the spring of 1971 after Read approached Track Records - who'd rejected them before - and wound up being hired there as a songwriter.

A lot of these songs have surfaced before in previous versions but these versions are entirely unreleased. Aside from the obvious updates of "Teenage Lightning" and "Cold Cell", "I Don't Get It" is an evolved version of "Spastiche"- originally circulating on the Backwards demos bootleg and appearing as a Song of the Week at one point.During an interview in 1997, John Balance claimed the title of this album was going to be Fire of the Mind (both a Louis Wain painting and a Stapleton [Nurse with Wound]/Tibet [Current 93] song)."It's In My Blood" doesn't resemble "AYOR" very closely and "Heaven's Blade" does not resemble the "Heaven's Blade" on the Backwards demos bootleg."Going Up" is a tribute to the theme from Are You Being Served?.Featuring songs recorded in final days of John's life, as well as material originally recorded at Trent Reznor's studio in New Orleans, and now substantially re-arranged by Peter Christopherson, this album is sure to be seen as the 'classic' Coil album of all time, and is not to be missed under any circumstances!

Tamam Shud was one of the most original and innovative Australian groups of the late '60s / early '70s, and they played a very important part in our musical development as pioneers of acid-rock and progressive music. Long after they split they remained a 'cult' item, and a definite mystique still surrounds them. Their original recordings were (and still are) highly prized by collectors and aficionados, but they are now very hard to obtain. Both albums are extremely good : Evolution showcases the bands distinct style with ripping acid guitar and strong songs whilst the second is an acid prog masterpiece in the realms of T2 and the Masters Apprentices "Toast To Panama Red" that's probably the most sought after Australian album of its kind.

The Creator has a Master Plan

John Coltrane left behind a legacy of experimental and extremely spiritual work whose timeless quality still reverberates today. After his untimely death many poseurs came out to stake their claim as the next Coltrane. Many tried and many failed. Then in 1969 a former sideman of Coltrane's, Pharoah Sanders, stepped out from the shadow of his mentor and recorded Karma, which bore the soul of Coltrane's musical and spiritual passion.
Karma was released four years after his first record as a leader, Pharoah's First (1965). While working with Coltrane, Sanders began to develop an aggressive tone that ripped into an anarchaotic passion owing as much to Coltrane as Albert Ayler. His records as a leader did not always reflect the raw energy that would show up on Coltrane classics such as Ascension. His 1966 Impulse! debut, Tauhid, is a great example of this. Sanders let the work take on a generalized groove that worked with the mood created in each piece. In doing so, he created not only his best pre-Karma record, but one of his finest overall. After Coltrane's death, Pharoah worked with his widow Alice before setting to work on what would become Karma.
As with many records of the mid to late-'60s/early '70s, Karma is based primarily around the first of two album tracks, “The Creator Has a Master Plan.” The track is one of the finest and best-executed and edited jams ever caught on record, though many critics would and will argue with that statement. The master plan of tracks on contemporaneous Miles Davis records like In a Silent Way or Bitches Brew was created by the editing and production efforts of Teo Maceo. Recordings like Free Jazz or Ascension, in contrast, worked by virtue of the way they tore down sonic and musical boundaries. Sanders incorporates these values into “The Creator,” making it more than just a loose jam; no matter where Sanders goes, he is in total control. Even as the piece peaks into volatile eruptions roughly sixteen minutes in, he saddles the passion and works the track back into the initial groove that was comprised its first movement.
”Creator” comes in at 32:47 and wastes not a single note. Opening with a virtual rush of sound, it then quiets down and drops a brief riff from A Love Supreme. The tune then works itself into a groove that would later be known as acid jazz, working with Eastern percussion and allowing the bass to float close to the front of the mix. This first section relies on a modal two-chord structure that keeps the tone bouncy and meditative. At eight minutes Leon Thomas begins a chant-like vocal that varies lines from the mantra “The creator has a master plan, peace and love for every man.” The vocals drop and the third movement becomes an unrelenting Coltranesque blitz that tears the mellow mood apart, only to combine the angst and mellowness in the next movement and settle back into a reprise of the first fourteen minutes.
”Colors,” on the other hand, is a shorter and more structured piece that features some solid and well-executed chops. Again Leon Thomas sings, and Ron Carter takes over the duties of Richard Davis and Reggie Workman.
Love or hate the music of Pharoah Sanders, you cannot deny the man's vision after hearing this record. His is an absolute genius approach to arrangement and performance. Though Sanders would release many great records and even mellow his distinctive tenor sound down, Karma is a record that deserves to be heard by any serious jazz fan.

The Grodeck Whipperjenny were wolves in sheep attire:a Cincinnati-based group of jazz musicians flexing their rock chops under the auspices of future CTI artist and Grodeck leader David Matthews,who at the time was serving as arranger and writer for the Godfather of Soul,James Brown.The band's lone 1970 release exists in the sonic hinterland between Funkadelic-style psychedelic soul and a distinctly soulful prog rock that shares some territory with Brian Auger and Norman Whitfield's Motown productions.The soupy results are truly sublime with funky tracks like "Sitting Here on a Tongue" coasting on Kenny Poole's fuzz guitar and Jimmy Madison's insistent drums that surely made Brown,who gets his requisite "A James Brown Production" credit, proud.The proceedings get even harder and heavier with the lysergic caveman stomp of "Put Your Thing on Me" and "Why Can't I Go Back." Matthews gets to strut his arranging stuff on the string-heavy "Conclusions" and takes his Hammond for a ride on the trippy "Evidence for the Existence of the Unconscious." A few dated speed bumps,"I Wonder" and "You're Too Young," prevent this from being a through and through classic,but it's a wild ride otherwise and not to be missed.

ANTONIUS REX : PRAETERNATURAL (ITALY'80)

This is maybe the best opus from the band, the more complete and complex one,even if sometimes people laugh at the intensity with which it speaks about darkness and horror.The album is mostly instrumental,with organ,keyboards and piano by Dorris Norton,a master in the field,and the excellent soloing work by Antonio Bartoccetti,who gives us some examples of the finest guitar phrases heard.The music is very dark and is the right heir to Goblin,who are the band whose sound nearest band to Antonious Rex.Sometimes there are references to the some most famous horror film soundtracks, ike the film score to Halloween.
This has to be considered the most mature release by the band,thanks to some astonishing piano layout and riffs and the distorted guitar work of Bartoccetti that at that times was very innovative.
Maybe the subject is too obscure during the whole length of the album,but it is very fascinating.

Osanna is classic seventies Italian prog.The basis of their sound is original heavy guitar rock often in combination with amazing flute solos.Additionally, more spacey,Pink Floydian parts and quiet interludes with acoustic guitar and flute can be heard as well.There are plenty of mood changes and surprises that make this music very dynamic and interesting.Their first three are masterpieces in their own right.The superb "L'Uomo" in which heavy rock and spacey jazz are only a few of the styles included,the soundtrack "Milano Calibro 9" and their third album "Palepoli" which is so bizarre and complex,beginners may be too dazzled by the array of styles presented.

Folk-Blues-Prog-Psych???

Cambridge-based CMU (Contemporary Music Unit, apparently) were a sort of folky bluesy progpsych outfit,like so many at the turn of the '70s,and they managed a couple of albums. Their debut, Open Spaces (1971) is a stunning, complex, melodic progressive album with exceptional female vocals, great fuzz guitar and strong keyboards.By their 2nd album, Space Cabaret (1972),CMU had moved away from their bluesy roots into a more folk/psych direction,although they could also rock out when the mood took them.There's some really nice moments on the album and a fair bit of Mellotron strings on Archway 272 (presumably referring to the area of North London). Original LPs on Transatlantic Records are now rare.

THIRD EAR BAND : THE MAGUS (UK'72)

T.E.B.'s Rock & Roll Album ?????

Falling giddily between the cracks of psychedelia,prog and free-form jazz,Third Ear Band baffled the best in the late '60s/early '70s,then cemented their reputation by providing the soundtrack to Roman Polanski's film Macbeth,which was also to be the band's third and final album.A fourth one,however,was recorded in December,1972,under the aegis of Ear's soundman Ron Kort,who also supplied percussion and piano to the set.But with their deal with Harvest Records at an end, and no new takers for the album in sight,the band faded away,to surface a handful of times in later years.The tapes,meanwhile,were carefully preserved by Kort,until finally published.Magus would have defied description at the time,and the musical progression over the intervening years has only highlighted the problem.Today a song like "New Horizon" with its gloomy electronics and militant beats would probably be tagged goth,a genre that didn't even exist back in '72.The title track,too,could fall into that same category with its insistent rhythm and moody melody,at least, until the organ swoops down in all its pompous, early-'70s glory.And what of "The Phoenix," a spoken word piece accompanied by recorder,twittering bird effects,and a low rumble-like aural wave?Beat poetry or improv jazz?The tribal drums that accompany "The Key" also sound thoroughly modern,while the violin that sweeps overhead in muted gypsy fashion pushes the number towards world music,although club crowds might prefer to claim it for their own.Elsewhere,the more electronic "Cosmic Wheel," with its rousing rhythm and Indian flavor, calls to mind the more intriguing electro-sounds of the early '80s.The song reappears as "Kosmik Wheel" at the end of the set,Mike Marchant's harsh vocals industrial in tone,the music itself now giving way to total abandon, and only the time-warp sound of the organ betrays its actual belated date.A shocking,but masterful,album for its day,and no less so three decades later.One wishes store staff good luck in the thankless task of choosing a genre bin for this set.

AREA : MALEDETTI (ITALY'76)

Jazzrock (??!) Masterpiece

Maledetti holds all of the elements that make Area such a hair raising listening experience.All of the Area elements are intact;from the Mediterranean sonic fusion,rhythmic assaults that leave one breathless,to newer elements of African rhythmic percussion via Paul Lytton,hot jazz elements courtesy of Steve Lacy,and a classical music overture with the aid of a string quartet, making Maledetti a monster in the Area catalog.
Along with Ares Tavolazzi on bass and keyboard genius Patrizio Fariselli,Demetrios Stratos has never sounded better with his vocal intonations.Starting off with "Evaporazione" we hear Stratos running back and forth spouting some Italian nonsense which ends abruptly with him screaming "Ladies and Gentlemen",leading to "Diforisma Urbano":a glorious glide of rhythmic keyboard mayhem that breaks with a keyboard run halfway through and Stratos vocalizing like never before."Gerontocrazia" contains one of Stratos's most incredible vocal workouts. f I had to pick one track that was most representative of Demetrios's style of singing this would be it, minus the yodeling inflections."Scum" is one of those tracks that will have you reaching out and pulling your old Monk and Bud Powell recordings and dust them off for a second listen.
Side two:enter the string quartet with a Bach concerto,magnificent in it's own right,and into "Giro, Giro, Tondo". Damn this is incredible from Stratos! So full of emotion and energy,many vocalist could take lessons from listening to this!Patrizio Fariselli shines like the brightest beacon in a dark harbor with his keyboard work which makes this one my all time favorite Area tracks. And ending Maledetti is "Caos",a workout of structures of insanity guided by no one.This is a masterpiece from one of the most innovative and exciting groups to have ever graced these shores and ears.They don't make em like this anymore!!!

Garage Psych Monster!!!

All-time classic South American psych record from 1969."This is the most innovative 60's record made in Venezuela.A full blast fuzz and wah-wah assault with backwards noise, screaming baby sounds used as a solo instrument, tons of effects,English vocals,a real masterpiece.Maybe this piece of psychedelic art deserves to be known as the most important record made in South America in 1969.Stephen Scott and Mario Seijas from Homer and The Don'ts, and Adib Casta from Los Claneras,who later became a famous painter and who passed away this year,came together to create this album for the Souvenier label (famous label in Venezuela).But the music was just too strange.So besides playing live (which was very dangerous at the time with this music and words) the album became rare and you can call it real 'underground' in any sense. They put people in prison for less in those days.

Both excellent albums by this classy UK '70s psych / Bluesrock band on one disc.They only released their albums in Germany."Brother Bat Bone" is a masterpiece sounding at times like a mixture of Captain Beefheart and the Pink Fairies.Creepy John Thomas had earlier played in the Australian Flies and went on to join the Edgar Broughton Band.

Born in Sydney,Australia,John Thomas has truly been rockin' around for over three decades. He's been writing songs since his first successful venture into the music business,when as a member of Melbourne based band The Flies,he co-wrote their chart hits. During this time,they became famous in Australia for their wild and frantic live performances. As the enfant terribles of the Aussie pop scene, they appeared regularly on TV and also supported The Rolling Stones, Roy Orbison and many others during their Australian career.Moving to London ,John released the "Brother Bat Bone" on the RCA label.
A second album,"Creepy John Thomas",was released on the Teldec label.These two albums have both become cult classics and are sought after by rock historians.Both albums have since been bootlegged by Fingerprint records although John has never received any royalties from sales of these recordings.In the early seventies, after spending over a year in San Francisco,John returned to London and joined the E.B.B. as guitarist.He is featured on the albums Live Hits Harder and Bandages (with Mike Oldfield).During this time John recorded with Dave Stewart and Annie Lennox in their pre-Eurythmics days.After several more years with the E.B.B., John moved to Berlin, Germany, in 1979, where as leader of Johnny & The Drivers,he remained part of the Berlin rock scene for nearly ten years.Two Drivers albums were released,"This Must Be the Night" on Polydor and "Homing in on Zero" on Phonogram.Now based in London,John spends his time writing and recording and planning his next attack on the music establishment. He runs Werewolf Music and spends most of his time time working with other artists as producer and musician and songwriter.John has just produced his first solo effort in decades, "Remember Me this Way",which appears on Werewolf Records.

Legendary Swedish heavy-progressive who released 8 albums between 1974 and 2004.The only addition to the normal guitar,bass and drums instrumentation is some mellotron here and there.It´s musical excellence with plenty of extended gratuitous guitar jams and very intricate lyrics.I´d like to recommend this band to everyone but since the lyrics are in swedish and such a big part of the music perhaps some might not understand it.In several ways,Trettioåriga Kriget ("The 30-year War" in English) can be compare to ANGLAGARD and LANDBERK to sense their influence.In the first,self-titled album,the songs feature various tempos and moods throughout,and plenty of odd times and jagged riffs.The keyboard sounds on a few songs are supplied by the incredible mellotron,uncredited and played by the drummer. The second "Krigssang" is an album that fans of 70's rock in general will enjoy,and not just progressive rock listeners.In sum,this is one of the definitive Scandinavian prog albums.

This is a solid LP.It's somewhere between acoustic west coast rock,late-period Beatles and Psychedelic Country-Rock (!!!).The songwriting is strong and reasonably ambitious,including a well-realized Kak-like suite on part of side two.The album has a fresh,summery feel to it.Originals (pressed on thick vinyl, in thick covers) come with a clever insert,an envelope that has some of the song lyrics written into letter form.The bass player of this band was in 1960's Austin band Bryan's Blokes,whose members would occasionally fill in for absent 13th Floor Elevators members on live gigs.A 5-piece band with some acid fuzz guitars,organ,mandolin, autoharp,pedal steel,bass,drums and male vocals.
